The hunt for successful international unscripted intellectual property, Ã la “The Masked Singer”, continues at a rapid pace.
Fox Entertainment and in-house studio Fox Alternative Entertainment have launched an international unscripted format fund to find intellectual property for the global market.
The fund will invest and develop unscripted concepts of international origin that range from reality TV and variety shows to dating and other genres. Networks and platforms will be targeted by the fund, which will seek profitable programs.
FAE will co-produce the series selected by the fund with the partner of each series. Rob Wade, president of alternative and special entertainment at Fox Entertainment, will oversee the initiative.
Fox had huge success with âThe Masked Singer,â a South Korean format that originally aired on broadcaster MBC and is now in its sixth season in the United States. Fox has again tapped into South Korean formats for its 2020 series âI Can See Your Voice,â which has also been renewed for season 2 on the broadcaster.
Charlie Collier, CEO of Fox Entertainment, said the fund offers an opportunity to find formats that diversify the list of content owned by the broadcaster and expand Fox internationally.
âFox has long been a world leader in alternative programming. This enviable track record of more than three decades of success brings with it great expectations to remain the world’s preeminent platform in the genre, âsaid Collier.
Wade added, âMany of the most powerful series that changed the face of television were unscripted formats that originated outside of the United States. With a deep well of undiscovered ideas around the world waiting to be recognized, the AWF is ready to deploy this format fund to partner with creators and local networks to develop broad, profitable and innovative which, if successful, will also benefit Fox here at home.
The FAE recently produced the variety competition program ‘The Big Deal’ for Irish television Virgin Media in partnership with Dublin-based BiggerStage.
The series, presented by Vogue Williams and starring famous judges, included pop legend Boy George; comedian and actor Deirdre O’Kane; Aston Merrygold, formerly of JLS and recent UK finalist for ‘The Masked Singer’; Jedward, the favorites of talent shows; and music star Lyra. The show – which was created and owned by FAE – marked the channel’s most successful original format launch.
FAE was formed in 2019 to oversee the production of Fox’s âThe Masked Singerâ. The division has also produced “I Can See Your Voice”, “The Masked Dancer”, “Name That Tune” and “Fox’s New Year’s Eve Toast & Roast 2021”. FAE co-produced “Ultimate Tag”. New shows include âCrime Scene Kitchenâ, âAlter Egoâ, âDomino Mastersâ and âNext Level Chefâ.
