One man is dead and another is hospitalized in stable condition after a shooting Monday night in the Profit Hills housing community in St. Croix, Police Department VI reported Tuesday.
At 8:48 p.m. Monday, an off-duty officer reported hearing gunfire in the area of the housing community, commonly known as the Harvey Project. During a check, the officers discovered shell casings and blood, according to the VIPD.
At 9:00 p.m., Juan F. Luis Hospital ssecurity officers reported that a gunshot victim arrived at JFL via a private vehicle. At 9:07 p.m., hospital detectives said another gunshot victim was also in a private vehicle.
Andres Ponce Jr., 23, was pronounced dead by a JFL ER paramedic with multiple gunshot wounds to the body. Ponces’ parents have been notified. The other victim has been treated for injuries sustained in the shooting and remains stable, the VIPD said in the press release.
According to the Source Homicide List 2022, this is the 10th homicide in Sainte-Croix and the 15th in the territory.
A preliminary investigation revealed the shooting took place at two separate locations in the Harvey project, police said. The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about this fatal shooting should call CIB at 340-712-6082, the CIB tip line at 340-778-4950, 911 or Crime Stoppers VI.
